Make sure to protect your tender shrubs from the elements. If you have tender shrubs in pots, they need to be protected in the cold weather. Tie the tops of the canes together; then take a sheet and cover the wigwam loosely. When you do this you allow air to flow and circulate which can actually prevent rotting, this method is great and better than just wrapping your plant in some plastic.
If you plan on growing peas, you should consider starting them indoors instead of beginning them outside. Seeds will always germinate much better when you first plant them indoors initially. You will also have hardy seedlings that will be able to resist disease and pests much better. You will be able to transfer the seedlings outdoors after they become better established.
Do you want fresh mint leaves without having to worry about them growing too quickly? Contain their growth with a garden container or large pot instead. You can plant the container into the soil if you want to, but the container will restrict the roots, and make sure that the plant doesn’t run rampant in your garden.
Remember to place a layer of mulch over the soil around your vegetables, approximately 2 inches deep. Mulch has a nice moisturizing effect on the soil it’s spread over. An added benefit is that it also inhibits weed growth. You will benefit by not having to spend so much time fighting weed growth.
